A cystic fibrosis patient STELLA GRANT dealing with the grief of the death of her sister spends time in her hospital room: following treatments and posting chat videos about herself and treatment on YOUTUBE, encouraging her best friend POE who is also a CF patient to own it and tell his mum about his relationship – she falls for a guy WILLIAM NEWMAN ‘Will’ who draws and is also at the hospital for a medication trial in an attempt to get rid of the bacteria infection in his lungs.
At first Stella keeping to the treatments and six feet rule totally ignores him but when she saw him almost committing suicide and discovers that he has not been following his treatment regimen, it made her start communicating with him on phone and later succeeded in making him adhere.
C.F. patients are to keep six feet apart to prevent the risk of cross infections-contracting bacteria from other C.F. patient is life threatening and their nurse BARBARA keeps reminding them about this anytime she sees them around but Will and Stella falls for each other and secretly goes on dates around the hospital sticking to five feet apart though and always have to run whenever the nurse shows up.
Stella throws a surprise birthday party for Will, Poe cooked the meal- he already decide to come out about him being gay and tell his mum about relationship~he discussed this with Stella, she invites Will’s friends and sibling and they all secretly dined at the cafeteria till Nurse Barbara caught them and sent them back to their rooms. Poe exclaimed that it was a great night.
Poe dies the next day and it left everyone in the hospital in tears. Stella is dismayed-she trashed her room and decided to do what she has always wanted to do ~to view the light outside the city, she sneaks out of the hospital and calls Will to join her.
They played and even touched-relieved because Stella was putting on gloves.
The nurse searches for Stella and texts her that a lung transplant just became available but Stella ignores the message in order to spend more time with Will.
They both arrive at a pond and slide around playfully on the frozen surfaces.
The hospital is thrown into a search party for Stella and Will: Will’s mum texts him and lets him know that there is a lung available for Stella. Will hurriedly tells Stella to follow him back to the hospital but she refuses.Stella falls into the ice: Will rushes, calls the hospital, panics and pulled her out but when she didn’t respond, he gave her a CPR-despite the risk of infection; Stella wakes up. Nick collapses.
Conscious at the hospital, Will convinces Stella to the transplant for his sake. The transplant is successful and Will is glad that she didn’t get infected.
Will makes a decision and when Stella wakes up, her parent gives her a sketchbook full of memories and a sketch of POE from Will, she sees Will through the glass of the room. He had set up a display of lights around her:her parent leaves the room and he talks to her through the window. He tells her that his drug trial isn’t working and he does not want her to deal with his eventual death. He confesses his love for her and told her to close his eyes that he won’t be able to leave while she is watching.
And when Stella opened her eyes amidst sobs. WILL’s gone.
