CHAPTER 2: What Will MAMA Do…
A loud knock on the door. Silence. Again. Silence.
The door starts to open.
Mama’s red eye flew wide open. She didn’t realize she has slept that long, it is almost dusk. Omotemi must have gotten to school by now, she tries to stand up but then her front door flew wide open which startled her back.
Who could that be? By this time?
“..Omoremiiiiiiiiiii!”
Mama jolted up at the sound of the voice. Sounded familiar. She hurries to the door and Mama’s face brightened as she saw….
“Ehi!” Mama exclaimed at her immediate younger sister who was busy struggling to lift her tyre bag away from the entrance.
Ehi abandons her box at the sight of her sister and gives Mama a big hug.
“Let me help you.” Mama says after the hug.
They both lifted the box and finally made it in.
“The whole of Lagos is here.” Mama says as she sits down, referring to Ehi’s luggage.
Ehi is the last daughter of Mama’s mother. Her father married two wives, her mother was the first wife but after giving birth to Mama and her elder sister – Omolara, their parent’s relationship faced quarrels and unhappiness because of the divert to a polygamous marriage. Eleven years later, Mama’s parents reconciled and that was when they had Ehi.
When Mama got married, Ehi moved in with Mama and that was the real time they had to bond because by the time Ehi was born, her sisters were big enough for higher institutions. Ehi got married the previous year, with no child yet, she works for a big telecommunication company in Lagos. She and her husband were present at Mama’s husband burial but they had to go back immediately because of work while Omolara stayed extra days with Mama.
“I told you not to bother your aunty Omotemi, now she is here” Said Mama to her daughter whom she was on a call with.
“Mamaaaa, I could not leave you alone. I feel better now that she is there. Let her help you, please…” Temi responds.
“Oh jareyy, I am here like I promised. Do you think I was happy leaving like that? I have taken proper excuse from work and will be here for at least the next two weeks. Your mother doesn’t have a choice now”, Aunty Ehi laughs. “Omotemi don’t mind your mother, have fun in school and study well. If you need anything call me, for now leave me and my sister alone” Aunty Ehi laughs more and Mama and Omotemi joins in the laughter.
“Okay Aunty Ehi, Mama byeeeee. I will call you again tomorrow, let me unpack now” Omotemi says happily.
“Don’t forget to call if you need anything, Bye Bye my daughter.” Mama replies and ends call.
“Thank you Ehi, at least Omotemi will stop worrying now. But, you really don’t have to stay here for that long. I know how the nature of your job is….” Mama starts to say.
“And that is exactly why I am here.” Ehi cuts her off. “I got a promotion at my work place….” Ehi paused as Mama begins to clap her hands out of excitement.
“I am going to give Omotemi her school fees for the session.”
As expected, Mama stops clapping and tries to protest but Ehi cuts her off.
“Mama Omotemi, you have to let me help you. Look, there is nothing you can even say, I am paying the fees. Temi is my niece, not a stranger and don’t even bother calling Temi to inquire why she told me, I forced her to.”
Ehi watches Mama as she smiled with tears in her eyes.
“That’s not even the main reason why I’m here. Big sis, look we are starting work together tomorrow.” Ehi continues.
“What work?” Mama queried.
“My boss informed me about a new project and development that the company is about to embark on, they will be hosting experts, scholars and very distinguished personnels at the renovated branch here in Ogun state.”
Mama looks puzzled.
“I’m getting to your part, calm down.” Ehi laughs at her sister.
“Well, I quickly jumped on the fact that we need to have a food arrangement. I convinced my boss that it has to be from a reliable and exquisite source. Which is where I am at the moment.” Ehi winks at Mama.
“I have spoken to some drivers that will be helping to deliver the food, in fact some of them will be coming today. I have ordered the packs, drinks and some foodstuffs that we will be needing and they will also be the ones taking the food to the location. I have spoken to a couple of my juniors and the kitchen girls who will help with the dishing when it gets there. The only thing you have to do is cook Mama.”
Ehi finishes with a big smile on her face.
Mama’s jaw was on the floor the whole time.
